En passant (French: [ɑ̃ paˈsɑ̃], lit. in passing) is a move in chess.[1] It is a special pawn capture that can only occur immediately after a pawn makes a move of two squares from its starting square, and it could have been captured by an enemy pawn had it advanced only one square. However, the en passant rule prevents a pawn from avoiding capture by another pawn in this manner, and allows the black pawn to capture the white pawn exactly as if the white pawn had moved only one square. This move can only be carried out on the move immediately following the white pawn's move. Without the en passant rule, this would allow a pawn to avoid an interaction with an opposing pawn.

Even though the pawn moved two, the en passant rule lets the opponent capure the pawn as if it moved one. For clarification, there's a nice animation showing a white pawn capturing a black pawn here.

I am only allowed, however, to take your pawn en passant in the move immediately after your movement of the pawn in question. So, now we understand that en passant move depends on another special move by a pawn, which isn’t going to be special after an en passant capture… 🙂 If you know the en passant rule, you can use it to your advantage, strategy-wise, or depending on your chess tactic, and you can also attempt to persuade your opponent to make an en passant move for your advancement!
